Fairtrade

Development agencies recognised the important role that consumers could play to improve the situation for producers. By buying direct from farmers at better prices, helping to strengthen their organisations and marketing their produce directly through their own one world shops and catalogues, the charities offered consumers the opportunity to buy products which were bought on the basis of a fair trade.

The fairtrade Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal.

Traidcraft

Traidcraft is the UK's leading fair trade organisation, fighting poverty through trade. Established in 1979 as a Christian response to poverty, the organisation combines a trading company and a development charity with a vision that sees a world freed from the scandal of poverty, where trade is just, and people and communities can flourish. Traidcraft pioneers the development of fair trade by:

  • building lasting relationships with small-scale producers in developing countries
  • supporting people to trade out of poverty
  • working to bring about trade justice
  • being open and transparent about our practices.

Why do we sell Traidcraft products in church?

Although many products can now be bought at your local supermarket, it is still important that you buy products from church. You demonstrate your willingness to fight poverty through your action buy buying products that you know will help their producers and their families in the third world. It is in fact allowing you to put your faith into practice, albeit in a small way, but many small actions make for a large voice. It may be that you have actually been surprised in that the quality of the goods sold is very good and there is actually no need to buy non-fairtrade goods. We don't actually mind if you buy some fairtrade products from supermarkets - we do as well - as long as you buy fairtrade products.
